This is a specimen x-ray performed intraoperatively during a wide local excision, demonstrating a spiculate mass with calcification centrally in the excised specimen.
A specimen x-ray is performed to radiologically assess the adequacy of excision. If the excised lesion appears close to one of the margins, the operating surgeon may take further tissue (shavings) from that margin.
Orientation of the specimen
The surgical clips are used to orientate the specimen to facilitate histopathological analysis. In this case:
1 clip = Superior margin
2 clips = Lateral margin
3 clips = Inferior margin
The acronym SLIM is used to remember this order.
